The Nepal Gen Z Protests have predictably ended in disaster. What began as a farce has ended in tragedy. The protesters are desperately trying to disassociate themselves from the violence that has erupted on the streets.
Rioters have burnt scores of Government Buildings to the ground. They have destroyed hundreds of business establishments. Violent mobs have set tons of homes on fire. They have burnt to death the wife of a politician. The Nepalese Army has taken over law and order on the streets but normalcy is yet to return. This is all far from over.
The Gen Z protesters, meanwhile, have issued several statements declaring that they have nothing to do with the violence. It’s preposterous to make such claims, of course. They are the ones who unleashed manic chaos in the streets. As Tywin Lannister once famously said, “Men love to blame demons when their grand plans unravel.”
‘Hami Nepal’, one of the organisers of the protests, is not the only group that has issued a statement disassociating themselves from the violence. Several other groups have done the same. But it’s far too late. The damage has been done.
Of course, the crimes of KP Oli and his government in all of this should not be ignored. There is reason to suspect that the Maoists in Nepal are responsible for at least some portion of the violence. News reports from the Himalayan State have confirmed that Naxals committed at least some of the arson. But it cannot be denied, the chaos was enabled by the Gen Z protesters.
Indian Liberals celebrate the Nepal Gen Z Protests
Indian liberals, along expected lines, have jumped in to celebrate the protests in Nepal. They are fantasising about similar protests in India against Narendra Modi. It’s not going to happen, of course. But they have given up on defeating the BJP electorally and are fantasising about harebrained schemes.

This was the Godi media of Nepal.

They did the same when protesters in Bangladesh committed a coup against the Sheikh Hasina Government. While Bangladesh burned and people suffered, they revelled in the ecstasy of the gore and destruction. What the did the coup achieve? Nothing apart from further deterioration of quality of life, empowerment of Islamists, economic calamity and crippling of governance mechanisms.
Indian liberals have clearly not learnt any lessons from the chaos in Bangladesh. Perhaps, they do not wish to. The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is that liberals are nihilists at the core of their beings. They do not care at all if their actions unleash the horrors of hell upon the living. As long as they get their dose of dopamine, they will be more than happy to set everything on fire.
Here’s why they should stop fantasising about Gen Z revolutions
This advice will likely fall on deaf ears. There’s nothing to suggest that they will heed this advice. But as someone with unabashed love for order and stability, I will say this. Be careful what you wish for. Be careful not to choke on your aspirations.
Things as they are might create the impression that Law and Order exists to protect the elites of society. But that is a misconception. Even at their most twisted form, Law and Order protects the weak above all else from what lies beyond. When Law and Order ceases to exist, the elites find ways to protect themselves. But it’s the poor and middle class that suffers.

When hooligans run riot on the streets, they do not destroy the rich. Yes, the rich may suffer some setbacks and damage to their property, but it’s nothing they cannot recover from. The poor, meanwhile, have their entire livelihoods robbed of them. The rich will recover from a destroyed property because they have other options. The poor have none when their homes are set on fire. It’s all they have. Quite literally.
Even in Nepal, the rioters have destroyed a lot of private property. A lot of them are owned by the rich. But more than elite property, they have rampaged through private property owned by the middle class. They have destroyed property that the poor of the country had a vested interest in.
Who benefits when colleges are set on fire? A lot of the business establishments the rioters have destroyed provided jobs to the needy. How does losing jobs benefit the poor? The collapse of the economy will impact those Nepalese the most who have limited options. Their best bet at prosperity was a functional economy. Now that is gone for the foreseeable future.
Law and Order Protects the Weak even at its worst
I am sure that Indian liberals are smart enough to realise that they are in a minority in Indian society, like everywhere else. They have no political power as such, not even in Indian urban centres. Most political groups are far stronger than them electorally, far more resourceful than them, far more capable of violence.
Indian liberals are free to express their voices and opinions only because Indian Law Enforcement authorities offer them their protection. It is in their best interests to not cut the branch they are sitting on. If mobs go on rampage tomorrow, who do you think they will target first?
Liberals, in truth, already know the consequences of the collapse of Law and Order. And they don’t like it one bit. What else were the Gujarat Riots in 2002? What else were the Delhi Riots? The Bhagalpur Riots? Do they think things will be different if ‘Gen Z’ protests in India lead to the collapse of law and order?

Liberals should be humble enough to acknowledge that it is the Indian State that safeguards their. It’s the Judiciary and the political elite that protects, and evens props up, liberal values. Liberalism in India cannot exist without the support and backing of the Indian State.
Fortunately, we already have examples we can use to demonstrate what happens where the writ of the Indian State does not run. Those are the declining Maoist conclaves in Central India. Liberals and Civil Society have deep sympathies for the Maoists. But it’s for good reason that they do not send their children to live there.
Again, at the cost of repeating myself, I will reiterate: Be careful not to choke on your aspirations. It is in the interests of all of us that the Indian State continues to reign supreme. Yes, there is need for reforms and improvement everywhere. But the alternative is far worse.
