OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will introduce erotica for its adult users in December. Sam Altman made the announcement in a post on X. He camouflaged the AI Porn announcement as part of efforts to treat adults as adults.
The OpenAI CEO said in the post, “In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o. If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it.”
Sam Altman added, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our “treat adult users like adults” principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

OpenAI’s erotica plan has come under a lot of fire with critics slamming ChatGPT over the same. Haley McNamara, executive director and chief strategy officer at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), said, “Sexualized AI chatbots are inherently risky, generating real mental health harms from synthetic intimacy; all in the context of poorly defined industry safety standards.”
McNamara went on to add, “While [OpenAI’s] age verification is a good step to try preventing childhood exposure to explicit content, the reality is these tools have documented harms to adults as well. We’ve already seen other chatbots emboldened to engage in sexual conversation simulate themes of child abuse or push sexually violent written content on users who asked them to stop.”

Mark Cuban, billionaire entrepreneuer and investor, said that OpenAI’s Erotica plan is going to backfire. He said, “No parent is going to want their kids using ChatGPT if they think erotica is part of the experience.”
Australian Government’s eSafety Commissioner Julia Inman Grant joined the growing chorus of voices criticising the move. She said, “As with other forms of online pornography, there is a danger that excessive, sexualised engagement with AI companions could interfere with children’s social and emotional development, setting up misguided or harmful beliefs and patterns that are damaging to individuals or relationships in real life.”

Sam Altman and OpenAI are only the latest tech giant to enter the AI Porn race. Grok, X’s AI tool, has the most permissive sexual content rules till now. Grok has very few restrictions on sexually explicit or NSFW content.
Social Media is overflowing with AI-generated erotic content. While there’s growing concern regarding the same, Governments are yet to develop strict regulatory frameworks to deal with the issue.
