Bangladesh Police has transferred the Pubail Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) for criticising the Jamaat-e-Islami on Facebook. Acting Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Zahidul Hassan, signed an order removing Pubail OC Sheikh Amirul Islam from duty.
In a Facebook Post related to Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, Sheikh Amirul Islam questioned the Jamaat’s role in the 1971 Liberation War. The Pubail OC commented, “First a referendum is needed to decide whether anti-liberation forces have the right to participate in politics in this country.”

Consequently, senior Jamaat officials filed a complaint with the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner against him. The complaint claims that as Pubail Officer-in-Charge, Amirul Islam, has participated in the political activities of a certain party. It also accused him of granting police protocol to leaders of that party.
Meanwhile, OC Amirul Islam told newspaper Prothom Alo, “Action has already been taken before the complaint was filed. So I have no comment on this matter.” However, in a comment to the Daily Sun, he denied the allegations. He said, “I did not write anything on social media. This is propaganda. An investigation is underway. I have been transferred from the police station to the GMP Police Lines.”
Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman apologises to Bangladesh citizens
At a recent event in USA, Shafiqur Rahman apologised to citizens of Bangladesh for its past mistakes. The Ameer acknowledged that the Jamaat-e-Islami did not want Bangladesh to gain independence from Pakistan. Furthermore, he said that the Jamaat-e-Islami wanted Bangladesh and Pakistan to remain united even as Pakistanis committed a genocide of Bengalis.
The Bangladesh Supreme Court lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami after the coup against Sheikh Hasina. In 2013, a High Court order had cancelled its registration. Sheikh Hasina had heavily cracked down on the Jamaat due to its Islamists inclinations and crimes committed during the liberation war
