Bangladesh: Madrassa teacher killed during attack at BNP office

A Madrassa teacher lost his life during an attack at the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) office in Khulna City. Unidentified gunmen fired shots and hurled bombs at the BNP office after arriving on motorcycles. They killed the 55-year old Madrassa teacher Imdadul Haque and injured 3 others.

Mamun Sheikh, organising secretary of the Jogipole Union BNP, suffered critical injuries. Another individual is in critical condition. The attack occurred at around 9:15 pm on Sunday night. According to reports, the actual target of the bullet that killed Imdadul Haque was Mamun Sheikh himself. However, the bullet missed him and hit the Madrassa teacher.

Imdadul Haque was a teacher at the Bashitala Nurani Hafizia Madrasa. He had gone to the BNP office to collect donations for a religious gathering.

Haque’s son, Anik, said, “I am preparing for my medical exams. It was my father’s dream for me to become a doctor. I do not know how I will continue my studies now.”

Meanwhile, Kazi Mizanur Rahman, president of BNP’s Khan Jahan Ali thana unit, said that the attackers’ real target was Mamun Sheikh. Aranghata Police Station OC Khairul Bashar said that an operation is underway to arrest the gunmen. Bashar also said that Mamun frequently chatted with party leaders and activists at the office. He was doing the same on Sunday night.
