Bangladesh: Girl fakes abduction and gang rape threat for iPhone

A college student in Bangladesh and her two classmates have been detained by the Police for allegedly staging a fake abduction and gang rape threat to secure money for an iPhone from her family. The incident is reported to be from Rupganj Upazila in Narayangang District.

Mahiya Akhter, the female student, and her two classmates, Sifat Mia and Cynthia Akhter, are all students of the local Government Murapara College. According to the Police, Mahiya planned the incident over several days after her family denied her money for an iPhone.

Rumours had begun circulating on social media on Wednesday that student of the Murapara College had been abducted and gang raped. Her family had registered a case in connection with the abduction at the police station as well.

According to Tarikul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge of the Rupganj Police Station, Sifat Mia had called Mahiya’s mother pretending to be her kidnapper and demanded 1 Lakh Taka (the Bangladeshi Currency) as random. Sifat even threatened to gang rape Mahiya if the ransom was not paid.

Mahiya spent the night at Cynthia’s home on Wednesday night. When her family did not pay the ransom, she drank cough syrup and deliberately lay unconscious near the college. Upon discovery, she was taken to the hospital for treatment and other medical tests.

Legal proceedings in the matter are currently underway.
