US President Donald Trump has decided to keep the original Club World Cup Trophy at the Oval Office after gate-crashing Chelsea’s trophy lifting ceremony on Sunday.
As Chelsea lifted the trophy, Donald Trump could be seen standing right in between the players. Trump ignored FIFA President Infantino who urged him to step aside. Chelsea star player Cole Palmer could be heard saying, “What is he doing?” Later, Palmer said that he was confused.
Palmer said, “I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.”
Chelsea Captain Reece James said about the Trump gate-crashing, “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.”
Donald Trump refused to leave the centre stage where the players were celebrating. Infantino had to finally intervene and take him back to make room for the players.
According to Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino gifted him the original trophy at the Oval Office in March when he came to meet the US President.
Trump said, “They said, ‘Could you hold this trophy for a little while?’ We put it in the Oval Office,” Trump said. “And then I said, ‘When are you going to pick up the trophy?’ He says, ‘We’re never going to pick it up. You can have it forever in the Oval Office. We’re making a new one.’”
He added, “And they actually made a new one. So that was quite exciting…It’s in the Oval right now.”
So apparently, Chelsea will team will be keeping a replica of the Trophy while the original Club World Cup Trophy will remain at the Oval Office, Washington D.C.
