Peter Szijjarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, has accused Ukraine of attempting to undermine its energy security. The Minister levelled the allegations after Ukraine attacked the Druzhba oil pipeline. Russia supplies oil to Hungary and Slovakia through the Druzhba pipeline.

The Druzhba pipeline is not in operation following the attack. Peter Szijjarto said on X that Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin has informed him that experts are working on restoring operations. However, Sorokin did not confirm when deliveries will resume.

Peter Szijjarto further asserted that the attack was part of Ukraine’s efforts to drag his country into the war. He said, “For 3.5 years Brussels and Kyiv have tried to drag Hungary into the war in Ukraine. These repeated Ukrainian attacks on our energy supply serve that same purpose.”
The Minister also issued a veiled threat, saying that electricity from Hungary serves Ukraine’s power needs.

Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha issued a caustic response to Szijjarto’s allegations on X. He said, “You can now send your complaints—and threats—to your friends in Moscow.”

The public spat between the two countries comes at a time when President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders to negotiate an end to the war. While the meetings so far have not yielded any result, there is reason to believe that an end might be around the corner.
