Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Trump Administration, Harmeet Dhillon, was once again targeted by MAGA influencers on X due to her religious faith. Harmeet Dhillon advised prominent MAGA journalist Eric Daugherty to educate himself after the latter posted a tweet degrading the Sikh Community. MAGA is an acronym for ‘Make America Great Again’, Donald Trump’s campaign slogan during his first presidential run.
This is a Sikh. Please try to educate yourself. There are over half a million Sikhs in America. https://t.co/ELuQvEZEzF

Harmeet Dhillon was castigated by several MAGA influencers for her response to Eric Daugherty. The comment section of her tweet was flooded with abusive replies oozing with hate and bigotry. She replied to some informing them that she was ‘muting’ them on X. However, the torrent of hateful replies was too overwhelming for her to respond to each and everyone of them
And not one of them belongs!

Half a million too many

Some also claimed that Sikh Americans are not actually Americans at all.
They are not American.

Living in America doesn't make someone American.
Others accused the Sikh Community of attempting to change American culture.
If youre going to demand that our culture change because you came here, all youre doing is giving me a reason to not let you come here.

There were some who said that the USA is a Christian nation.
Half a million is nothing, this is a Christian nation

Why MAGA influencers are targeting the Sikh Community
Giani Singh, a Sikh Granthi from New Jersey, conducted the Morning Prayer at the US House of Representatives on Friday. This did not go down well with certain sections of the Republican Party. Mary Miller, a Republican Congresswoman from Illinois, expressed her disappointment on X. However, she identified Giani Singh as a Muslim.
Asserting that Giani Singh should not have been permitted to lead the Morning Prayer, she said, “America was founded as a Christian nation, and I believe our government should reflect that truth, not drift further from it… May God have mercy.”
Mary Miller has since then deleted her post on X. She was criticised by her Republican Colleagues and Democrats alike for her bigoted comment.
The matter did not end there as MAGA influencers picked up the incident and took to X to express their anger against the Sikh Community. They claimed ‘Waheguru’ is a demon and that the USA is in the midst of a spiritual war.
It’s time for America to wake-up and realize we are in a spiritual war!

Today the GOP-controlled House allowed a Sikh man to usher chants to the demon “Waheguru” over our nation.

The clarification by Harmeet Dhillon that the person leading the prayer is a Sikh in her post in response to Eric Daugherty appeared to suggest that she believed the opposition from the MAGA base is inspired by a misconception that Giani Singh is a Muslim.
Her post gives the impression that she believes the Sikh Community is demonised only because they are confused with Muslims. However, the posts by others labelling Waheguru a demon confirms that the hatred for the Sikh Community is independent of their feelings towards Muslims.
Harmeet Dhillon was targeted for chanting the Sikh Prayer at the Republican Convention
Harmeet Dhillon offered the ‘Ardas’, a Sikh Prayer, at the Republican National Convention in July last year. Then too, the MAGA base had unleashed their fury on her. During her speech after the prayer, Dhillon had said that Waheguru is the ‘One True God’, which had thrown Christian Conservatives into a frenzy.

Dhillon had received significant criticism from the Sikh and Hindu Communities as well for what they saw as an attempt to disassociate Sikhism from its Hindu roots and associate the religion with Abrahamic Faiths instead.
