New York Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani attended an Eid event organised by the Consulate General of India in New York only a month before calling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘War Criminal’. The Eid event was organised on the 12th of April, 2025. Zohran Mamdani made the comment against Pm Modi in the 3rd week of May.

Zohran Mamdani attended the event at the invitation of the Consulate General of India. The Indian Consulate extended the invitation despite the New York Assembly Member’s anti-India stance being well known. In 2023, Mamdani was one of three elected officials in New York who had denounced PM Modi’s visit to the City.

During a campaign event in May, Mamdani had said about PM Modi, “This is someone who we should view in the same manner that we do Benjamin Netanyahu. This is a war criminal.” It is unclear why would Mamdani accept the invitation from the Consulate of a Government he believes is presided over by a ‘War Criminal’.
Past Controversies of Zohran Mamdani
A video had gone viral recently where Mamdani was spotted attending a controversial rally. He is heard saying in the video, “I am here today to protest against the BJP government in India and the demolition of the Babri Masjid that attempted to build a temple on the ruins of it.” In the same video, the mob is heard saying, “Who are the Hindus? Harami (Bastards).” The video is believed to be from 2020.
The representative of the 36th District in the New York State Assembly has been involved in several controversies in the past due to his far-left political ideology. He was arrested in 2023, a week after the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, during a pro-Palestine protest outside Senator Chuck Schumer’s house.
Zohran Mamdani again sparked a controversy during his debate with fellow NYC Mayor aspirant Andrew Cuomo when he refused to confirm whether he believes Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish State. He is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan Academic Mahmood Mamdani.
