Pakistan suffers at least $100 million losses in latest Sindh Protests

The Goods Transporters Alliance Association (GTAA) in Pakistan has revealed that they have suffered losses to the tune of PKR 2800 crores (~$100 million) during the ongoing protests in Sindh. They have said that their vehicles and oil tankers were damaged and their goods were stolen.

They have demanded the Sindh Government to compensate them for their losses within 48 hours. If their demands are not met, they will hold a nationwide strike which will cripple Pakistan’s logistics and economy. The GTAA boasts of having 40,000 freight vehicles in their fleet.

Sindh has been rocked by protests over the Indus Water Canal Project. The project, officially called the Green Pakistan Initiative, was launched by Army Chief Asim Munir and Pak Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The project after construction would divert Indus Water from Sindh to irrigate millions of acres of uncultivable land in the Pak Punjab province.

The Sindh activists say that the project will cause further water scarcity in the province after completion. They say that the main objective of the project is to further benefit Pak Punjab’s feudal landlords and corporate farming at the expense of Sindh. After massive protests in April, which included blocking of national highways that disrupted the functioning of the Karachi Port, work on the project was halted until a consensus was reached. However, as per the Sindh activists, work on the same continued unofficially.

Things escalated massively after the law enforcement officials in the province opened fire at the protesters who were demanding that the project be scrapped permanently. At least one protester lost his life during the police firing. Following the murder, violence escalated massively and the house of the Home Minister of the province was burnt down.

Multiple videos have surfaced on social media that show the clash between the law enforcement officials and the protesters. Pakistan is currently in a Civil War with 3 of its provinces, namely, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. The current clash, which has the potential to escalate into an even bigger crisis for Pakistan, reveals that not even a war against India was enough to unite the country.
