'Urban Naxal' SfPD group continues to lie about Dharmasthala

Students for People’s Democracy (SfPD), a group based out of Bengaluru, is continuing spread lies about Dharmasthala. These lies about Dharmasthala have been proven to be false. Yet, that hasn’t stopped the group from regurgitating the same.

In a post on Saturday, SfPD posted the allegations by the ‘whistleblower’ as Gospel Truth. It also spread the lies of Sujatha Bhat about her daughter Ananya Bhat who never existed. It is pertinent to mention here that the Karnataka SIT investigating the claims regarding Dharmasthala have slapped several charges against the ‘whistleblower’ related to perjury, forgery and fabrication of evidence.

The whistleblower had claimed that he had buried 70-80 bodies across multiple locations. The Police have arrested him for misleading investigators with false information. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said, “The SIT has arrested the complainant witness, and he is in police custody. Since the investigation is in progress, more details cannot be disclosed. We cannot disclose more about the case until the SIT submits a final report.”

Meanwhile, Sujatha Bhat has said that she never even had a daughter. Earlier, she had claimed that her daughter Ananya Bhat had gone missing after a trip to Dharmasthala in 2003. She admitted to making a false complaint at the behest of Girish Mattannavar, Jayanth T. and others.

All of this has been public knowledge for over a week. And yet, SfPD chose to peddle the same lies to tarnish the reputation of the holy Hindu temple town.

What SfPD said about Dharmasthala

The SfPD said in a post on Instagram, “From the time of these claims breaking out into public purview, the matter has been trending across social media, even if mainstream media has largely ignored this issue, and a general discourse is emerging among people, that reflects fear and horror about the safety of women in general, and about the safety in a temple site such as the Dharmasthala. This is a very real reaction to what is really a deeply undemocratic institution whose authority is often treated as unquestionable.”

The SfPD added, “These institutions, and the socio-economic basis on which they stand and derive their power from, will have to be fought against by all democratic forces.”

The statement by the group went on to add, “All of this indicates the callousness and the potential risks many face if the truth of the case comes to light, given that the truth is not in the best interests of the powers that be.”

After spreading other canards against the management of Dharmasthala, the statement ended with the conclusion, “The recent churning in Dharmasthala has already uncovered some skeletons; however, now the state machinery is framing the whistleblower himself as a fraudster. This is nothing surprising, as a complete and impartial inquiry is not in the interests of the social elite.”

SfPD’s Urban Naxal ideology

The group in a statement with 40 other organisations and individuals claimed that Operation Kagaar is a war against Adivasis despite the fact that it was obviously against Maoists. It was during this operation that dreaded Naxal terrorist Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraj was killed.

In the statement, the organisations demanded that the Indian Government declare immediate ceasefire with the Maoists and announce unconditional peace talks. It also demanded an “independent inquiry” into “extrajudicial killings”.

The statement was issued by SfPd along with Naxal-linked People’s Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) among other organisations. PUCL has a convicted Naxalite as its Vice President.

SfPD had also issued a statement in solidarity with FACAM’s Ehtmam-ul Haque, after the latter was allegedly detained by Delhi Police. In the same statement, the group had emphasised that the CPI(Maoists) had declared “unilateral ceasefire” while the “Brahminical Hindutva Fascist State continues to unleash severe terror on Adivasi people”.

The SfPD has also condemned the “extrajudicial killing of Com. Basavaraj”. It also declared a “Red Salute to Comrade Basavaraj and all martyrs of the people’s war!”

In the post, the group declared that the “The Indian state has blood on its hands once again”. It added, “Home Minister Amit Shah boasts of a ‘historic victory’ after security forces massacred Maoist leader Basavaraj and 26 others in Bastar, despite their unilateral ceasefire offer.”

It also said in the statement, “This killing spree comes just weeks after the CPI (Maoist) released a public statement declaring a six-month unilateral ceasefire in April 2025, calling on the Indian state to engage in dialogue over militarisation and corporate extraction in Adivasi areas. This gesture, unprecedented in recent years, was neither acknowledged nor reciprocated. Instead, the Indian state launched one of the bloodiest offensives in recent memory.”

The group also said that Basavaraj was not really a terrorist but a ‘revolutionary’. It also carried an obituary glorifying the Naxal terrorist.
