Made-in-India drones and defence equipment have made a huge impact during the recent India-Pakistan Conflict. In light of the geopolitical realities of our time, Indians on social media are trending the hashtag #FundKaveriEngine in order to demand greater government investment in the Kaveri Engine Program.
The Kaveri Engine Program is an Indian program that aims to develop an indigenous jet engine for fighter jets, especially the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). Until the 2010s, an investment of over ₹2000 crores had already been made into the project. Since 2023, a further ₹3000 crore investment is expected to be made in collaboration with Safran (France) for transfer of technology of jet engine and the joint development of an improved engine based on Kaveri core.
In comparison, the USA, Russia and China have developed jet engines for their aircraft at a cost ranging from ₹41,500–₹83,000 crores, ₹16,600–₹33,200 crores and ₹16,600–₹49,800 crores respectively.

Why an indigenous jet engine is important for national security
The development of an indigenous jet engine is critically important for Indian national security, especially given the unreliability of the USA as a partner and Russia’s increasing reliance on China. Sanctions or Export Restrictions could jeopardise the functionality of entire fleets during war time.
Overhaul, part replacements and upgrades are essential requirements for jet engines. An indigenous jet engine would ensure uninterrupted logistics without hampering combat readiness. It would grant India immunity from export bans and denial of essential technology.
