New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani caused a major political upset in the Mayoral Democratic primary elections in New York City. Mamdani won with a commanding lead with former governor Andrew Cuomo conceding defeat. Cuomo said, “Tonight is his night.”
New York City is a Democrat stronghold with strong majority of Democrat voters. The outcome of the Primary Election result won by Mamdani is likely to be decisive before the November General election face-off. Mamdani will battle Eric Adams who opted to fight as an independent candidate and Curtis Silwa, a Republican, among other candidates.
However, Mamdani’s anti-Israel stance, statements regarding defunding the New York police, anti-Hindu rhetoric triggered some strong reactions. Mamdani also spoke about arresting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an interview.
When the host asks if Mamdani would welcome Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York, he said, “As Mayor, New York will arrest Benjamin Netanyahu”. He has also called Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, a war criminal like Benjamin Netanyahu in one of his interviews.
In another video posted on the social media platform X, Mamdani spoke against the construction of Ram Mandir in India amidst anti-Hindu chants. The mob chanted, “Who are the Hindus? Harami (Bastards).”

Mamdani said, “I am here today to protest against the BJP government in India and the demolition of the Babri Masjid that attempted to build a temple on the ruins of it.”
Zohran Mamdani condemned of dividing people along religious lines
Jaspreet Singh, a Sikh American Community Leader and lawyer in the USA, accused Mamdani of dividing people by religion. He said, “Hate has no place in our city. We believe in equality, love and respect for all. We believe all are children of the same God.”
He added, “But Zohran has used his platform to amplify some of the worst anti-Hindu rhetoric imaginable. Words matter, and instead of uniting the Indian community, he seeks to divide us by religion, pitting Muslims and Hindus against each other. Associating Hindus with fascism and using derogatory words against them is highly objectionable.”
New York based Hindu American politician and Civil-rights lawyer, Jenifer Rajkumar, speaking against Mamdani said, “Hinduism is a faith of peace, nonviolence, and interfaith harmony. Hindu voters want our leaders to build bridges—not burn them. We must reject hate—whether it comes from the far left or the far right. Our city deserves leaders who unite, not provoke—who build coalitions, not headlines.”
Recently, Mamdani refused to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada”, the phrase leaders often tied with recent violence against the Jewish people in the USA, like in Washington and Colorado. Mamdani’s remarks on the matter was called “outrageous and especially offensive.”
Social Media had strong reactions on Mamdani’s Primary Win
However, Mamdani’s Primary win received its share of criticisms among the X users. The America PAC, founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, said “America, meet New York City’s Democrat Nominee for Mayor.”

It pointed out how Mamdani wants to defund the New York Police and make New York a socialist state.
Another user named Brigitte Gabriel said, “The Mayor of New York City will most likely end up being Zohran Mamdani. Sharia Law will be coming to the United States. We must do everything to stop it.”

Another user posted a video about how an Islamic preacher set up a “Dawah” booth in Manhattan saying, “Islam is not just a religion – it’s an ideology. A complete system of control: political, judicial, economic, and educational. All other ideologies – Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, secularism, democracy- are evil and bound for hellfire.”
She further added, “And it’s precisely what Zohran Mamdani and his Islamic allies are ushering in. They’re not “integrating”, they’re infiltrating. They don’t want to coexist – they want to replace. 9/11 was just the opening act. Now they’re coming through the front door with voter rolls and campaign flyers. The Trojan Horse isn’t coming. It’s already here, and it’s draped in a crescent flag.”

Apart from criticism, there were some serious trolling too.

While New York City has a major base of liberal voters, Mamdani, a Muslim winning the Democratic primary is strong indication of what might happen in the upcoming general election for Mayor in November.
