The 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil officially ended on July 7. However Xi Jinping’s absence raised eyebrows and people have started asking questions. What happened to the Chinese President? Some experts have claimed Xi Jinping has been put under house arrest. Not surprising? Same experts have been predicting the collapse of the CCP for a decade.
As per CNN, Xi’s absence meant the Chinese President will be missing the chance to present himself as the alternative to Donald Trump or the USA.
However, Brazilian First Lady, Rosangela da Silva, also known as ‘Janja’ insulted the Chinese in May during a state dinner hosted by Xi Jinping himself. As per reports, Janja broke diplomatic protocols and lectured Xi and his wife about the harmful affects of TikTok during the formal dinner. Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan were upset with Janja because the dinner was not meant for any official speeches.
South China Morning Post wrote that Peng Liyuan found Janja’s behaviour disrespectful to Xi Jinping. Xi did not bother commenting about the issue. Chinese media also ignored the controversy. But someone leaked the story to the Brazilian media which sparked a row in Brazil.
The First lady of Brazil later spoke about the incident in a government event in Brasilia. She said, “There is no protocol that will make me stay silent when I have a chance to speak about this,” adding, “From the highest official to any ordinary citizen, my voice will always be used to protect our children and teenagers.”
Reports now claim that Janja’s insult of the Chinese might have influenced Xi Jinping’s now famous snub at this year’s BRICS summit in Brazil.
This is not the first time Janja’s opinions were not appreciated. Last year, Janja used the ‘f’ word against Elon Musk ahead of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Musk later said, “They are going to lose the next election”, about President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Workers Party.
Musk’s X platform is not particulary welcomed by Brazil’s left wing government where it faced a ban last year. He had to pay $5.1m fine to lift the ban in Brazil.
Other than insulting Xi Jinping or Elon Musk, Janja also mocked the suicide of a pro-Jair Bolsonaro supporter and gave military advice to the President Lula at the time of Jan. 8, 2023 riots in the capital, Brasilia.
A recent Datafolha poll of June 12 revealed 36% of Brazilians considered Janja’s actions hurt the government, 14% show support. But the ratings were even worse for the Brazilian President who scored 40% job disapproval rating with an increase of 8% point from October 2024.
