Christian Nationalists in the United States of America are upset that their leaders wished the Hindu Community a ‘Happy Diwali’. They claim Diwali represents ‘Demon Worship’ and has no place in western countries. Furthermore, they spent the joyous occasion ranting and raving on social media.

Trump’s FBI Chief Kash Patel received a lot of hate for wishing people a happy Diwali. Kash Patel belongs to the Hindu Community. Christian Conservatives called him a ‘pagan demon false god worshiper’ and said it is a valid reason to remove him from his position at the White House.

Christian Nationalist Joel Webbon was much more hateful in his response. He wanted Kash Patel gone not only from the White House but from USA itself.

Harmeet Dhillon, a Sikh Trump official, also received quite a lot of hate for her Diwali wishes.

Even Ted Cruz suffered quite a lot of trolling for his Diwali wish. The Texas Senator was a former presidential aspirant in 2016. Since then, his stocks have declined significantly but he remains fairly popular.

Nevertheless, Hindus celebrated Diwali with great pomp and vigour in India and across the world. In India, especially, the mood was extremely joyous as economic activity skyrocketed during the festive season.
Christian Nationalists from other western countries too spread hatred against Diwali
An account called ‘Canadian Patriot’ declared that Diwali is a Satanic Ritual. Therefore, the Hindu festival has no place in any western country. To prove his point, the account shared a screenshot that narrates the Hindu religious basis of Diwali.

Founder of the Christian Nationalist Party Jayda Fransen targeted Reform UK over their Diwali wish. Jayda Fransen is based out of London.

There are important lessons for the Hindu Community to acknowledge amidst this rising tide of hatred. Firstly, they have to realise the precarious position they are in. Secondly, recent events have shown that online hatred has real life consequences. Therefore, they need to raise awareness among the Hindu Community over that. Lastly, Hindu bodies should engage relevant community stakeholders to address the issue.
