Democrat Mikie Sherrill has won the New Jersey Gubernatorial election, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli comfortably with a double-digit margin. Mikie Sherrill will be the first female Democrat Governor of New Jersey.
New Jersey, it is the honor of my life to earn your trust to become this great state’s 57th Governor.

Democrats have also won the Gubernatorial election in Virginia. In New York, Zohran Mamdani became the first Muslim Mayor of the city.
Mikie Sherrill is a vocal critique of Trump Tariffs against India
Sherrill has been consistently criticising the Trump Tariffs against India on the campaign trail. In September, she visited Edison, New Jersey, which she described as the “heart and soul” of the Indian-American Community in the state.
She said, “Throughout our state, Indian-Americans have contributed so much in all types of industry… I have to tell you, these are the businesses that I am most concerned about with the tariff programs going on.” She added, “We just saw huge tariffs put on India on top of some of the basic baseline tariffs.”
After Trump placed a 50% tariff on Indian imports, I visited Edison to hear directly from local business owners. The consensus? These tariffs are crushing small businesses and driving up costs for New Jersey residents. pic.twitter.com/Dk6WIWD4Xq

She said that she spoke to a person who own an Indian apparel shop. “The way Indian clothes are made is a craft. Artisans have developed this craft over hundreds of years. You don’t find that here in the US. So many of these clothes are imported. And now he’s saying that it might start to be really impossible because he’s looking at 65% added cost.”

Earlier in August, she visited the Indian-American businesses Patel Brothers and the Moghul Express in Edison. She said, “From Oak Tree Road to India Square in Jersey City, my administration is going to make sure that Indian-American businesses have the tools to grow and thrive.” She accused her opponent Jack Ciattarelli of supporting the Trump Tariffs, “even though they cause businesses and families to feel “pain”.”
The Charlie Kirk Controversy
Mikie Sherrill found herself in hot waters due to comments she made after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. While she condemned the assassination, she also condemned Kirk’s politics and said she will continue to oppose his political agenda.
She had said, “I take my oath to the Constitution seriously. I believe in free speech and that the First Amendment wouldn’t be necessary if it were only meant to cover language we agreed with.” She added, “It is meant to protect people like Charlie Kirk who present vile dissenting views. But it is also meant to protect teachers, doctors and TV comedians who may express views the president doesn’t like.”

She further accused Charlie Kirk of advocating for a Christian Nationalist Government and wanting to roll back the rights of women and the Black Community. She said she will “condemn political violence, racism, attacks on women and the hypocrisy coming from Trump and his acolytes.”
Republican Candidate Jack Ciattarelli heavily criticised her for her comments. He applauded her for skipping campaign events in New Jersey to vote ‘yes’ on the Charlie Kirk resolution in the House of Representatives. Then, he criticised her for calling Kirk a misogynist and a racist. “The two things are inconsistent to me,” Ciattarelli said.
Republicans also criticised her for supporting Zohran Mamdani in New York City. They had said that Mikie Sherrill saying that she shares the goals of ‘socialist’ Mamdani is “not only absurd but disqualifying”.
